Why Save Les Boldstad Golf Course?
Growing up near Les Bolstad golf course in Falcon Heights, MN, has been an invaluable part of my life. In my youth, I enjoyed the beautiful terrain with my teammates as a golfer, runner, and Nordic skier. Some of my fondest memories include not only playing golf and training for ski races, but also cheering on my high school teammates during races held at Bolstad. As a parent, I now take my children to the driving range and Nordic skiing at Bolstad as they learn a variety of outdoor sports.
However, the future of this treasured community asset is uncertain. The University of Minnesota, which owns Les Bolstad golf course, is considering selling this property for redevelopment. This decision would not only pave over the lush fairways and mature trees but would also eliminate a beloved space that has served diverse purposes for our community for decades. Golfers, cross-country runners, Nordic skiers, and university professors who conduct scientific research all benefit from this open space.
Les Bolstad golf course has hosted countless events, from large cross-country running races like the Roy Griak Invitational and MN State High School CC Championships, and serves as a peaceful retreat in the middle of a large metro area. The unique value it offers extends beyond leisure, serving educational purposes as university professors utilize it for field research, fostering academic growth and environmental studies.
We urge the University of Minnesota to reconsider its plans for this historic and versatile site. Instead of succumbing to the pressures of development, let us preserve Les Bolstad golf course for future generations, ensuring it remains a cherished and accessible part of our community. This isn't just about preserving a golf course; it’s about maintaining a shared cultural and recreational space that enriches the lives of thousands each year.
