Green Space
The University of Minnesota has owned the 141-acre property since 1916. It has been a gem for neighbors and athletes for its proximity to recreational activities, including golf, cross-country running, and Nordic skiing.
‘Biophilia’ is what the ancient Greeks called the idea that humans have a biological need to connect with nature. For over a century, the natural environment at Les Bolstad Golf Course provided an opportunity for green exercise and connectedness to nature (CTN).
‘CTN can be defined as the way people identify with predominantly natural landscapes and the relationships they form with the elements in those environments. Research is clear and consistent on the beneficial health outcomes associated with green exercise.
These evidence-based health benefits from exercise in nature include:
Reduced stress, lower concentration of stress hormones
Better sleep
Reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety
Greater feelings of happiness, well-being, and overall life satisfaction
Reduced aggression
Lower rates of obesity and diabetes
Lower pulse rate and blood pressure
Improved immune function
Improved postoperative recovery
Increased longevity
